Cooling that has faded, aircon that only works while you’re moving, or a noise that wasn’t there last summer are all worth looking at before the next hot spell. Refrigerant escapes slowly through hoses, seals and fittings, so plenty of cars simply need an auto air conditioning regas.
If the gas has gone in a matter of weeks, though, you have a leak, and topping it up only sends more out of the same hole. We pressure-test and leak-check first, then tell you whether you need a re-gas or a repair, and what it costs, before we start. A heater blowing cold air is usually the cooling system telling you something. Your heater runs on hot coolant from the engine, so low coolant, a thermostat stuck open or a blocked heater core will leave you shivering and can turn into an overheating engine if it is left unfixed. Usually because hot coolant isn’t reaching the heater core. Low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, or a core blocked with sludge are the common causes. The rest of the time it is electrical: a dead blower motor, a failed resistor pack, or a blend door actuator that has stopped opening. A proper diagnosis sorts out which side it is on before any parts get replaced.
Cold air means no heat is getting to the heater core. Check coolant level first, then the thermostat. A temperature gauge sitting lower than usual or taking forever to climb gives that away. Air trapped in the system after a coolant change does the same thing. If the air is warm at idle but cold once you are driving, mention it when you call, because that points straight to a coolant flow issue.
A sweet smell inside the cabin, a windscreen that fogs up and won’t clear, damp carpet in the passenger footwell, and coolant disappearing with no puddle under the car. Weak heat normally comes with it. Heater cores either block up or leak, and the repair is different for each, so we pressure-test the system to confirm which one you are dealing with before we quote.
A fan that has gone silent is normally the blower motor, its fuse, or the wiring and connector feeding it. If it only works on the highest setting, that is the resistor pack, which is a very common failure and a quick fix. Weak airflow on every setting is more often a clogged cabin filter. All of it is electrical work we can do on site.
The signs are cooling that isn’t what it used to be, air that takes longer to get cold, or a system that gives up on a hot day. Refrigerant escapes slowly over the years, so most cars need their air conditioning serviced every couple of years. We leak-test before re-gassing, because if the system empties in a matter of weeks, a re-gas on its own won’t hold.
Low refrigerant is the usual answer, but not the only one. A compressor that won’t engage, a seized clutch, a condenser packed with road grime, a cooling fan that isn’t spinning, or a pressure switch shutting the system down will all cause warm air. On climate-controlled cars, a failed sensor does it too. Testing the pressures and the electrics tells us which.
Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Fuses, relays, earths, pressure switches, sensors, blower resistors, actuators and climate control modules are all electrical, and any one of them can leave you with no heat, no cold or no fan. Cars will also shut the air conditioning down themselves if another system reports a fault. We read the codes and test the circuits, not just the gas.
